KEDC has launched a Buy Local Campaign throughout the region to help support local farmers
Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation has launched a Buy Local Campaign throughout the region to help support local farmers.
As a part of their 2007 workplan, the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation has launched a campaign that will be seen throughout the region in a number of capacities. “Keep it in Kittiwake” is the new slogan KEDC is using as part of this Buy Local Campaign that comes with a simple message of buying locally to help keep the money made by the local people in the region. It is KEDC’s hope that this campaign will create awareness among consumers on the benefits of buying local, both personally and for their own communities, while making it easily accesible to purchase local produce. Buying local will not only enable more dollars to stay within the local economy, but also in helping to create a more sustainable, while growing and developing the agricultural industry, which has the potential for employment.
“I am very excited for this campaign to come to fruition; the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation has worked diligently to profile farmers within our region and the produce that can be purchased here in Kittiwake. This is an all around win-win; for the farmers, store owners, the consumers and of course the economy”, expresses Jill Bennett, Executive Director of KEDC.
Signage will be located in 21 participating stores throughout the Zone with the Buy Local logo being the main component to make it easily identifiable for consumers to purchase local produce as well as at other locations where local produce is available. Consumers will be able to find this new logo at their local grocery retailers from Gander to Lewisporte, Twillingate to Gander Bay, Musgrave Harbour to Gambo, and Glovertown to Eastport. Brochures will also be sent out to stakeholders as well as available at participating grocery stores. The KEDC is very encouraged by the number of participating stores, and hopes to add more stores in the future, once the campaign is launched.
"The response that KEDC has received from the farmers and the local grocery stores is encouraging. I am very pleased with the work done thus far by all parties and I feel that this campaign will make a difference to the current agricultural industry in our region if embraced by the consumers", states Pat Martin, Chairperson of the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation’s Natural Resources Committee. KEDC will also be working with the Town of Lewisporte and the Beaches Heritage Centre on creating a farmer’s market as a part of their upcoming Trade Show and Agricultural Exhibition, respectively. These farmers market will enable all sized farms an opportunity to sell produce to a large audience in the hopes of increasing sales while creating awareness of the quality and range of produce being grown in the area.
